Get into the ring! How this works...

This is easy! Each week on Thursday I post my homily idea...my main focus for preaching this coming Sunday. What I am hoping for is a reaction from people in the pews. Does my "focus" connect with your daily life, faith, and experience? Or not? Either affirm the direction I am going in (by giving me an example from your life) or challenge me, ask for clarification! Questions are the best! Reaction rather than reflection is what I'm looking for here. Don't be afraid, get in the ring. Ole!

This homily reflection helps me identify what it is about intimate relationships that I see, particularly within or through parish life, that inspire me so deeply. For instance, I was made privy to a conversation recently between a father and his adult son who had been engaged in work together of serving the poor. They both had been moved by the experience and shared their reflections about it with one another over a cup of coffee, and later shared them with me. Even without being there - without entering the conversation or being physically present for it - I was deeply inspired not only by their expressions of their own spiritual growth as a result of the activity, but also by the awareness of their shared intimacy over the experience they had together. This homily reflection is opening my eyes to seeing that what is inspiring me about this story is that I am sensing the divine communion that the two of them shared - and by their telling of it, I too am entering into it. In serving the poor together - and with genuine hearts - this father and son were caught up in the tenderness and compassion that God has for us humans. And then as they reflected on it further together, that divine love became even more inspirational to them - and later to me. By sharing this experience of love in their own small group of two, it grew even further to include me - and now you, as I share it with you. I guess that's the beauty and genius of what Jesus tried to show us in his groups of 50.
