Get into the ring! How this works...

This is easy! Each week on Thursday I post my homily idea...my main focus for preaching this coming Sunday. What I am hoping for is a reaction from people in the pews. Does my "focus" connect with your daily life, faith, and experience? Or not? Either affirm the direction I am going in (by giving me an example from your life) or challenge me, ask for clarification! Questions are the best! Reaction rather than reflection is what I'm looking for here. Don't be afraid, get in the ring. Ole!

How am I dying to self? Life in Christ, how does it figure in daily life? Good questions, Father.

I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me. Christ lives in ME, wow, what a thought. And in YOU, incredible!!! I am just beginning to realize the wonder of that, the reality, the joy of this, and the responsibility. And the more I realize Christ's Presence within myself, the more I am able to see and hear Christ in others, no matter the "disguise" or "veil" people put on Christ, no matter that they may be oblivious to this fact. And in seeing Christ's in others, I pray for an opportunity to make Him known in whatever way the Lord desires, whether it be a direct action of some kind of assistance, a kind word, a greeting or a silent prayer.

"I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me..." and "I live by faith in He who has loved me and given himself up for me." These are words that speak of love of another and the sheer gift of oneself to another - most easily understood in our society in marriage but they can apply to any relationship of genuine love. I think they are great words to ponder in a homily because they speak of the love for which we all strive. We know we are accomplishing this call to love as Christ does when we find ourselves doing things because of another that we might not have done otherwise. An easy example is to tell of a friend of mine who loved her job but gave it up to take care of her sick husband. Left to her own preferences, she would have liked to continue to work - had always imagined herself working - but with the needs of her husband she didn't think twice of giving up that part of her identity for his sake. I think we can name many examples throughout the day when we had the opportunity to give up our wants and needs for the sake of another - and to do so in the name of Christ. Sometimes the choice requires extra strength, though - and sometimes we fail. The Matador's encouragement, alongside Paul's teaching, hits the mark so well!
