Get into the ring! How this works...

This is easy! Each week on Thursday I post my homily idea...my main focus for preaching this coming Sunday. What I am hoping for is a reaction from people in the pews. Does my "focus" connect with your daily life, faith, and experience? Or not? Either affirm the direction I am going in (by giving me an example from your life) or challenge me, ask for clarification! Questions are the best! Reaction rather than reflection is what I'm looking for here. Don't be afraid, get in the ring. Ole!

I see this homily reflection as a good challenge for me because I am one who likes discipline. It’s been a useful tool me for me over my lifetime – helps keep me on track. But the Matador’s words stretch me to see that, as with anything, there is such a thing as too much of a “good thing.” It’s possible to get so entrenched in the discipline that it becomes a god rather than a guide. An extreme example of this is in the movie Dead Poet’s Society. The character named Neil was the adolescent who took his own life, so frustrated by his father’s pressure to pursue a dream other than his own. Meanwhile, his father was caught up in his own discipline and structure of life – believing that to be the key to his success. Discipline rather than loving became the focus for him in his relationship with others – to the point that he missed the agony his son was experiencing. Discipline can become automatic and, if not careful, in the practice of it we can lose freshness and sincerity in our approach to life – and even to those whom we love most dearly.

Your brief 3 minutes was disturbing, and you nailed it INCREDIBLY, WOW!!! My husband & I talked long on this one. THIS is what happens to people of religion where religion becomes the focus instead of God or loving. And I will always wonder whether I am truly a disciple or a wanna-be disciple. I don't recognize myself as a disciple (or what I think a disciple should be/do).

My one thought was, and it goes with anon 1, why does it have to be either/or ... cuz I think it can be both disciplined children of the Father in discipleship with Jesus.

My thought is this is a good example of 'what is clericalization of the laity.'

We need Holy Priests.

i don't know how else to say it.
