Get into the ring! How this works...

This is easy! Each week on Thursday I post my homily idea...my main focus for preaching this coming Sunday. What I am hoping for is a reaction from people in the pews. Does my "focus" connect with your daily life, faith, and experience? Or not? Either affirm the direction I am going in (by giving me an example from your life) or challenge me, ask for clarification! Questions are the best! Reaction rather than reflection is what I'm looking for here. Don't be afraid, get in the ring. Ole!

"I'm special"

This positive message resulting from the self-esteem efforts of the last 20 years is a first symptom that we are still living under the powers and principalities of the slavery of death and sin.  When we notice the difference between ourselves and others, that they or he or she is not like me or I am not like other people, we can be sure that we have are suffering from the hangover from our slavery to death and sin. My separate-self, monkey mind, that is constantly comparing myself to others, resenting their success and grieving over my failure is a sure sign that we are suffering from a hangover from our slavery to death and sin....that's a sign that we have been unbelieving.

I'm tempted to this sin of judgment, condemnation, competition, separate-self slavery mind.

Jesus  by his triumph over death and sin,  has re-created us not as competitive separate-selves but friends.  Friends are the ones for whom we lay down our lives.

At-one-ment!

when I am judging myself, either positive or negative, I am not trusting in God but rather in myself. God's will in my life is lived and will be used for His purpose. It is opposite from the world of zero sums. Everyone wins in Christ even in suffering we win. The lamb has been sacrificed for our sins and the atonement is for His church which unifies us in one body, with many parts that all work together for His glory.

I'm special, we are all special, we are all sinners. We all at times fall short or " miss the mark", and by doing this sin we separate ourselves from the source of life; we sentence ourselves to a death. A death of annihilation, a darkness loneliness - a death of the soul, the state of disconnect from God who is the source of life.
When we give up the "me" in selfish sinfulness for the "we" in being selfless and God loving- we are no longer helpless creatures trapped by sin and death, but rather transformed into the children of God - filled with the joy of Christ.
"We" - to be surrounded by faithful, joyful, hopeful Christians in community - our lives are a powerful witness to God's love and the liberating truth of Christ's resurrection.
"We" are all One , we are all one body, Christian friends who we are all brothers and sisters in Christ.

"Friends are the ones for whom we lay down our lives."

Salvation happens in Christ. Christ invites us into his life. Christ shared in our death, so that we may share in his life. So that we may rise to true life- authentic life, life with Him without end.
